Iron beds were first made about 200 years ago and were hand forged with solid wrought iron. During the industrial revolution iron beds were manufactured on a big scale. The softness of the iron when hot makes it easy to work by hand and enables blacksmiths to create a variety of designs.
If you are buying an antique iron bed it is important to check its condition. Cast iron fittings are difficult to repair and once broken can no longer be used. You should also make sure that the side rails of the iron bed frame go with the head and footboard since using the incorrect ones could cause problems. In general, since wrought iron resists corrosion far better than modern steel, a lot of wrought iron beds have survived since they were first made.
